Boosting Cross-Strait Medical Device Exchange: Taiwan Delegation Visits China
Taiwan's medical device industry organized a delegation to visit China to enhance cross-strait exchanges and create business opportunities for cooperation between the two sides.
In recent years, Taiwan's medical device manufacturers have entered mainland China and established good initial contact with the local market. To promote further exchanges between medical device manufacturers across the Taiwan Strait, seek business opportunities for cooperation, and expand into China's domestic market, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Taiwan Medical and Biotechnology Devices Industry Association will lead a delegation of 25 Taiwanese medical device manufacturers to visit Shanghai, Xiamen, and Shenzhen from April 12 to 19, 2009, for trade talks.
This mission is part of the Ministry of Economic Affairs' (MOEA) new Cheng-Ho Plan under the "Land by Land Project," aimed at exploring business opportunities in China's ''Strengthening of Basic Medical and Health Service System'' project, which is part of the 4 trillion RMB infrastructure investment. The Chinese government plans to spend RMB 850 billion to reform its healthcare system, aiming for full coverage of urban and rural residents under the basic healthcare insurance system by 2011. This reform is expected to significantly improve the accessibility and quality of basic healthcare services while reducing the burden of medical expenses on residents.
Taiwan's medical equipment products are globally recognized for their high quality, reliability, and reasonable prices. Taiwanese companies have also been active in the Chinese market, with several medical consumables. Blood pressure monitor manufacturers are already setting up plants in China and gaining local market recognition. China's healthcare reform, focused on strengthening basic healthcare infrastructure, led to the construction of more hospitals and increased spending on personal healthcare services. This presented a significant business opportunity, attracting attention from medical equipment manufacturers worldwide. It is an ideal time for Taiwan’s medical device manufacturers to expand their presence in China.
The delegation was organized by the Taiwan Medical Devices Industry Association, the Foreign Trade Association (FTA), chaired by Mr. Chen Bin, Chairman of the Medical Devices Association. Mr. Wen Yueh-Huo, Director of the Market Development Department at FTA, will accompanyed the delegation. This strong team includes representatives from King Ming, Huaxin Medical Devices, Honglin Instruments, Puyi, Shengwang, Harmonix, Xinfeng Chemical, Baojian Technology, Kanding, Ruilmei, Macromart, Sihong, Fuqiangxin, and other medical devices, consumables, and home care providers. Additionally, Taiwan's renowned pharmaceutical company, Cheng Kuang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., will enter the mainland market with its traditional Chinese medicines.
The delegation held trade fairs in Shanghai and Xiamen, inviting over 160 buyers to participate. The group also visited the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, local medical equipment associations, and several hospitals. On April 18, the delegation attended a “Press Conference and Trade Fair for Taiwan's High-Quality Medical Equipment” at the China International Medical Equipment Expo in Shenzhen. This event aims to showcase the advantages of Taiwan's medical equipment industry to mainland Chinese industry representatives and promote Taiwan’s excellent medical device products, fostering friendly and cooperative relationships with China.
